Chapter Nine

Bostyn

“You ready, son?” Pops tapped on my bedroom door that Valentine’s Day of 2013.

I huffed, fumbling with my tie, as I stood in front of the full-length mirror. The house was buzzing with guests. We were supposed to have a small courthouse wedding, but it seemed like my mother and Mandy’s mother had invited everyone in their fuckin’ family tree. Mandy wasn’t feeling well at all that week and didn’t want to have a reception that day, but I couldn’t tell by the way the house was packed like “ladies free before twelve” night at the club. Who’d have ever thought they’d be so happy to celebrate two teenagers who hadn’t even turned 18 years old yet getting married only because the bride-to-be had gotten knocked up? You would’ve thought we were Bey and Hova by the number of gifts that were stacked on our dining room table downstairs.

Mandy was already at the courthouse with her mother and father, and I was at home with my family and the other guests who were going to follow us to the courthouse in Annapolis. Pops was going to have his boys from the precinct lead us down Route 50 to Annapolis. Talk about drawing too much attention to myself. I just wanted to get the shit over with. I stood in the mirror, struggling with my tie, when Pops entered my room.

“Having trouble?” Pops laughed a little as he closed the door behind him.

I glanced at his reflection in the mirror before tossing the tie on a chair that stood alongside my mirror. I was like fuck it. I didn’t want to wear a goddamn tie for this bullshit anyway. I peeped my reflection in my window, eying myself in my black Alexander Wang button-down shirt and black pants. I went over and sat on my bed, pulling my black-and-white Alexander Wang Adidas box from under my bed.

Pops shook his head at me as he watched me slip my feet into my sneakers. “On top of wearing all black, you’re going to wear sneakers to a wedding?”

“Shit feels like a funeral anyway. Might as well wear black,” I muttered, looking up at my Pops like he had lost his mind trying to tell me how to dress for some shit he knew I wasn’t down with. Little did he know, I already had my divorce papers signed and in my safe deposit box at the bank. I’d gotten the paperwork from the law library at the very courthouse that Mandy and I were about to get married in. I was prepared for that shit when the day came because it was coming. I was going to do whatever I had to do to make that bitch leave my ass.

Pops cleared his throat before coming over and sitting beside me on the bed. He looked my clothes over a little before he helped to adjust my collar. “I know you’re upset with me—”

“Upset?” I barely let him get the sentence out when I cut him off.
